The Metropolitan Opera revived Wagner's Lohengrin starting last night, with tenor Ben Heppner in the title role and soprano Karita Mattila as Elsa.

The production is Robert Wilson's stark, stylized, and controversial 1998 staging. Sets are by the director, costumes by Frida Parmeggiani, and lighting by Heinrich Brunke.

In addition to Heppner and Mattila, the cast includes Luana DeVol as Ortrud, Richard Paul Fink as Telramund, Eike Wilm Schulte as the Herald, and Andrew Greenan as King Henry. Philippe Auguin conducts, filling in for the injured James Levine.

The production runs through May 6.
