April 23, 2005
The Metropolitan Opera premiered a new production of Gounod's Faust on April 21.
The production is directed by stage veteran Andrei Serban, with sets and costumes by dance, theater, and film designer Santo Loquasto and lighting by Duane Schuler, the resident designer at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Nikolaus Wolcz is the choreographer.
On opening night, the starry cast included tenor Roberto Alagna in the title role, soprano Soile Isokoski as Marguerite, baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Valentin, and bass René Pape as Méphistophélès. James Levine conducts.
Later in the run, Veronica Villarroel replaces Isokoski, Hung Yun replaces Hvorostovsky, and Steven Crawford will conduct.
The production runs through May 21.
