Concord Records Finalizes Acquisition of Fantasy Records

By Ben Mattison
30 Nov 2004

The jazz label Concord Records has completed its purchase of Fantasy Records, which was first announced in June, Reuters reports.

The sale price was not released, but it reportedly topped $80 million.

With Fantasy, Concord acquires the catalogues of a number of jazz, soul, and folk record companies purchased by the label, including Prestige, Milestone, Riverside, and Stax. The Prestige holdings include important recordings by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, and others. Riverside recorded Cannonball Adderley, Clifford Brown, and Dave Brubeck, as well as Davis.

The catalogue of Stax, the seminal Memphis-based soul label, includes music by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the MGs, and Isaac Hayes.

Concord Records was founded in 1969 by Carl Jefferson and is currently owned by TV producers Norman Lear and Hal Gaba. The label scored a hit this year with Ray Charles's Genius Loves Company.
