Conductor Seiji Ozawa plans to launch an elite music school in the Swiss village of Blonay, on Lake Geneva near Montreux, the Associated Press reports.
Starting next summer, the school will give 20 of the top student musicians in Europe intensive training in chamber music. Tuition will be free, with funding coming from individual donors, foundations, and local governments. Auditions in Switzerland and Germany will begin soon.
Ozawa, the music director of the Vienna State Opera and the former conductor of the Boston Symphony, told the Lausanne newspaper 24 Heures that the school would bring the students together with world-class musicians. "I believe that the best way to help students become musicians at a high level is to allow them to play music in quartets with artists of great experience," he said.
