The popular PBS television series Live from Lincoln Center makes a major change from its usual format next month. On Thursday, January 10, the popular music commentator Rob Kapilow presents one of his trademark What Makes It Great?® programs — this one with the title "I Can't Believe It's Schoenberg!" — broadcast direct from Lincoln Center's Kaplan Penthouse.
Six artist members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, including CMS co-artistic director David Finckel, join Kapilow for an in-depth look at Arnold Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht ("Transfigured Night"), one of the most popular and approachable works of this famously difficult composer.
In another departure from Live from Lincoln Center-as-usual, the show will continue online after the television program ends: PBS.org will offer a live webcast of the second portion of the CMS concert, which will feature the six musicians in Brahms's String Sextet in G major, Op. 36. The complete webcast will remain available for viewing on demand at PBS.org for one week following the telecast.
"I Can't Believe It's Schoenberg!" airs on PBS's Live from Lincoln Center on Thursday, January 10 beginning at 8 p.m. U.S. Eastern time; check your local listings for broadcast time(s) in your area.
