The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts for an audio-visual documentation project.
The donation, which will be provided over two years beginning next February, is designated for documenting jazz, contemporary dance and theater by artists or organizations previously funded by the Foundation. With this financial support, the Library will be able to record about 25 complete performances as well as about 45 oral histories relating to those performances.
In addition, the DDCF gift will enable the Library to do preservation work on about 70 hours of taped oral histories related to the life and work of Martha Graham. These tapes, which are already in the Library's collection, are in extremely fragile condition.
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center is located on the Lincoln Center campus at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza, between the Metropolitan Opera House and Lincoln Center Theater.
