The Aspen Music Festival and School has received the largest gift in its 48-year history, a $25 million grant from Kay and Matthew Bucksbaum.

The donation, announced by the AMFS administration last week, will form the core funding for the building of a new campus for the festival and institute in the Colorado Rockies.

A master plan by Harry Teague Architects and Design Workshop for the new 23-acre complex, to be named the Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus, was approved by the local zoning body last month. Once final authorization is received from the Pitkin County Board of Commissioners, construction could begin as soon as the fall of 2008. The new Bucksbaum Campus, which will be shared with the Aspen Country Day School, should be completed within three to five years.

Matthew Bucksbaum, who first joined the AMFS board in 1985, is chairman emeritus of General Growth Properties, an international real estate investment trust based in Chicago. He is also on the boards of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago; last year he and his wife gave a $2 million matching grant to Lyric Opera to fund its nationwide radio broadcasts, which are now known as the Bucksbaum Family Lyric Opera Broadcasts.
