Original Three Tenors Telecast to Air on PBS Beginning This Week

By Matthew Westphal
26 Nov 2007

As a special piece of holiday programming (and for end-of-year pledge drives), PBS member stations around the U.S. will present a re-broadcast of the 1990 event that gave birth to the Three Tenors phenomenon.

Titled Carreras Domingo Pavarotti in Concert, the program presents the special 1990 performance given by Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras with conductor Zubin Mehta at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome to coincide with soccer's World Cup finals.

The program of favorite opera arias and show tunes proved wildly popular with television audiences and record buyers, creating the lucrative Three Tenors franchise and arguably changing the entire classical recording industry.

Carreras Domingo Pavarotti in Concert airs up to four times this week on many PBS stations. On Boston's WGBH, for example, the show can be seen tonight at 7:30 as well as Nov. 28 and 29; New York's WNET offers the concert on Thursday, Nov. 29, Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2. Other stations will present the special through the first part of December; check local listings for the broadcast times in your area.
