Soprano Montserrat Caballé Shares Classical Latin Grammy

Montserrat Caballé, the legendary soprano who at age 74 is still appearing at such venues as the Vienna State Opera, is one of two winners in the classical category of this year's Latin Grammy Awards. The honors were announced and presented last night by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences at a ceremony in Las Vegas. She won for her CD titled "La Canción romántica española," a collection of 14 art songs from 19th-century Spain which she recorded last year on the Spanish label Sello Autor. The disc is the fourth Caballé has made in a series surveying the history of Spanish solo vocal music; the first three releases featured medieval melodies, Renaissance songs for voice and vihuela, and 20th-century art songs. Tied for top honors in the "Mejor Album de Música Clásica" category is an all-Beethoven CD on the Brazilian label Boscoito Fino by the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo under the baton of its artistic director, John Neschling. The disc includes the Symphony No. 6 and the Consecration of the House Overture.
The other three classical nominees were:
Vol. 3 of the Chávez series was a nominee last year for both Latin and anglophone Grammy Awards; Vols. 1 and 2 were Grammy winners in 2004 and 2005.
