Opening Night to Go Ahead as Chicago Lyric Opera and Union Reach Settlement

By Matthew Westphal
28 Sep 2007

The threat of a strike by the chorus, dancers and production staff at Lyric Opera of Chicago has been averted and tomorrow night's season-opening gala performance of Verdi's La traviata will go ahead as scheduled.

Lyric Opera's administration released a statement this afternoon announcing that it has reached tentative agreement with the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), the union which represents the company's choristers, dancers, non-singing actors and production staff, on a new labor contract. The previous contract expired on May 1.

Two days ago, Lyric Opera's AGMA members voted by a wide margin to authorize a strike; the union publicly announced a strike threat that same day.

Details of the new Lyric/AGMA contract will be released after a ratification vote by the full membership. (No date for a vote has yet been set.)

The new season at Lyric Opera formally begins tomorrow evening with La traviata, starring Elizabeth Futral, Joseph Calleja and Mark Delavan and conducted by Lyric music director emeritus Bruno Bartoletti. Puccini's La Bohème, with new stage direction by retired soprano legend Renata Scotto, opens on Monday, October 1. Information and tickets are available at www.lyricopera.org.
