More Revolving Sopranos as Met Finalizes Casting of Lady Macbeth

By Matthew Westphal
24 Sep 2007

Back in July, the Metropolitan Opera engaged in a round of revolving sopranos, bringing Hasmik Papian to the house to sing her acclaimed Norma this October and moving Maria Guleghina from that role (which she'll still sing in November) to Lady Macbeth, a role she'll be performing for the first time at the Met. But to do Lady Macbeth, Guleghina gave up her Aidas this week and next month, and Angela M. Brown took those performances over. And so on ...

The piece of the casting puzzle left over from summer was the January run of Macbeth. The Met is presenting the opera in three installments: fall (October 22, 26 and 31, November 5), winter (January 5, 9, 12 and 15) and spring (May 9, 13 and 17). As things had stood, Guleghina was set for Lady Macbeth for the autumn dates and Gruber for May, but the latter had withdrawn from the January performances. Now the two ladies will split the winter dates: Gruber will take January 5 — her first time in the role at the Met — and January 15, while Guleghina takes January 9 and 12 — the latter one of the Saturday matinees to be broadcast in high-definition video and audio into cinemas on three continents.
