Pavarotti Gets OK to Leave Hospital - But Decides to Stay a While

By Matthew Westphal
15 Aug 2007

Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti, who was hospitalized last week with a fever, has been cleared by his doctors to return home when he is ready.

Terri Robson, the singer's manager, told the Reuters news agency that Pavarotti "was in wonderfully high spirits when I saw him" on Monday (August 13) in Modena, Italy. "Doctors have now happily given him the go-ahead to leave hospital and resume his summer holiday with ... his family and he will be leaving hospital imminently."

The tenor himself, however, has chosen to stay for another few days. His wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, told the Italian agency ANSA that he wants to remain at the hospital because he finds it more peaceful there than at home. (He and Mantovani have a four-year-old daughter.)

The 71-year-old Pavarotti's health first made news last year, when doctors in New York discovered and removed a cancerous mass from his pancreas. News reports last month indicated that he is responding well to cancer treatment.
