Glamorous young Dutch violinist Janine Jansen has withdrawn from the Serge and Olga Koussevitzky Memorial Concert this Sunday (August 5) with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Center in western Massachusetts.
A statement released by the BSO this afternoon said that she is unable to perform due to illness.
Replacing Jansen will be another talented young violinist: Stefan Jackiw, who made his New York Philharmonic debut last month in the annual Concerts in the Parks. Only 21 years old, the Boston-born Jackiw has already performed with, among others, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Chicago and Boston Symphony Orchestras.
Jansen's is the second withdrawal from the August 5 concert: earlier this week, conductor Edo de Waart cancelled his appearance due to a back injury. Filling in on the podium will be BSO Assistant Conductor Ludovic Morlot.
Despite these changes of artist, the program remains as originally announced: the world premiere of composer Robin de Raaff's Entangled Tales for orchestra (a BSO co-commission), Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3. Jansen did play Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto last night with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms in London. According to her website, her next scheduled performances — of the Mendelssohn Concerto, as it happens — are on August 22 and 23 with the Czech Philharmonic at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in northern Germany.
