The winners of the 2007 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati have been announced.
25-year-old Ching-Yun Hu of Taiwan received the gold medal, which grants an Alice Tully Hall recital, numerous other engagements and $10,000 in cash. Hu, who also received the George Musekamp Gold Cash Award, studies with Serge Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
The silver medal was given to Christopher Atzinger, 30, of Minnesota. Currently on the faculty of St. Olaf College, he received $5,000 in cash.
Yale School of Music student Yuri Shadrin, 26, won the Bronze Medal and its $3,000 cash award. From Russia, he studies with Peter Frankl.
The competition's final concerto round was held on July 7. Hu played Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, Atzinger Mendelssohn's First and Shadrin performed Tchaikovsky's First Concerto.
Fourth place, carrying a $1,000 cash award, was given to Ilya Kazantsev, 23, of Russia; fifth place ($500) went to Oleksandr Poliykov, 29, of Ukraine. Tying for sixth place and receiving $150 each were 24-year-old Rui Shi of China and 30-year-old Henry Wong Doe of New Zealand.
Nineteen pianists aged 18 to 30 entered the contest's preliminary rounds on July 2. 12 advanced to the quarterfinals, seven to the semifinals.
The competition's judges were Larissa Dedova of Russia, Swan Kwon of South Korea, Minoru Miura of Japan, and Robert Ruckman and Robert Thomas, both of the U.S.
Previous winners of the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati include Angela Cheng, Aleksandar Serdar, Tatiana Tessman and Ilya Yakushev.
