Reclining Figure, the six-ton bronze sculpture by Henry Moore in the reflecting pool on Lincoln Center's North Plaza, was lifted and removed from its resting place there this past weekend for the first time since it was installed in 1965.
During the pre-dawn hours of last Saturday (June 30), workers wrapped the sculpture and harnessed it to a crane which lifted it high into the air over the Upper West Side of Manhattan and deposited it onto a flatbed truck. The artwork was then transported to a storage facility.
The sculpture was removed so that the first phase of Lincoln Center's redevelopment project could proceed. New and wider stairs will be constructed from West 65th Street up to the North Plaza, where a restaurant will be built with a public lawn incorporated onto its sloping roof.
Plans are for the sculpture to be returned to the reflecting pool in the fall of 2008.
