ASCAP Announces Recipients of Adventurous Programming Awards

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has announced the recipients of its Adventurous Programming Awards. Given annually, the awards recognize American orchestras who, in the season just past, gave prominence to works composed within the last 25 years.

Conductor and ASCAP member Lenoard Slatkin presented the awards on June 22 during the American Symphony Orchestra League's 62nd National Conference in Nashville.

Said ASCAP Vice President of Concert Music Frances Richard in a press release, "these are the orchestras that enrich the repertory and keep our great concert music tradition relevant, vibrant and alive."

The winners are:

John S. Edwards Award for Strongest Commitment to New American Music
     Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Morton Gould Award for Innovative Programming
     Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming
     Minnesota Orchestra

Awards for Programming of Contemporary Music

    Orchestras with Annual Operating Expenses more than $14.1 Million
         First Place: Los Angeles Philharmonic
         Second Place: The Cleveland Orchestra
         Third Place: San Francisco Symphony

    Orchestras with Annual Operating Expenses $5.7 - $14.1 Million
         First Place: New World Symphony (Miami Beach)
         Second Place: Nashville Symphony
         Third Place: Colorado Symphony Orchestra

    Orchestras with Annual Operating Expenses $1.8 - $5.7 Million
         First Place: Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
         Second Place: Hartford Symphony Orchestra
         Third Place: New Mexico Symphony

    Orchestras with Annual Operating Expenses $470,000 - $1.8 Million
         First Place: Boston Modern Orchestra Project
         Second Place: Berkeley Symphony Orchestra
         Third Place: South Dakota Symphony Orchestra

    Orchestras with Annual Operating Expenses $470,000 or less
         First Place: Northwest Symphony Orchestra (Seattle-Tacoma)
         Second Place: Orchestra 2001 (Philadelphia)
         Third Place: Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra (Texas)

    Collegiate Orchestras
         First Place: Portland State University Symphony Orchestra
         Second Place: Peabody Symphony and Concert Orchestra
         Third Place: Stanford Symphony Orchestra

    Youth Orchestras
         First Place: Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra
         Second Place: Etowah Youth Orchestras (Etowah County, Alabama)
         Third Place: Vermont Youth Orchestra

    Festival Orchestras
         First Place: Cabrillo Music Festival
         Second Place: The Aspen Music Festival and School
