Ingrid Fliter, the fast-rising 33-year-old Argentine pianist, has signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics. Her first disc for the label, an all-Chopin recital, is scheduled for release in the spring of 2008.
In January 2006, Fliter was named the fifth Gilmore Artist. The honor, which carries a $300,000 stipend, is presented every four years by the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival; the judges review a candidate's work for an extended period of time without his or her knowledge. By now the Gilmore Artist award has an impressive pedigree: Fliter's two predecessors are Leif Ove Andsnes (1998) and Piotr Anderszewski (2002), both of whom are also EMI Classics artists.
Born in 1973 in Buenos Aires, Fliter made her professional orchestra debut at age 16 at the Teatro Colón in her hometown. After moving to Europe in 1992, she won prizes in several competitions, including the Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy (1998) and the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2000, silver medal). Her career in the U.S. began to take off shortly after being named the Gilmore Artist: within two months of the award, she had made her American orchestra debut with the Atlanta Symphony under Donald Runnicles and — filling in for her compatriot and mentor, Martha Argerich — her Los Angeles Philharmonic debut under Charles Dutoit. She has since had recital debuts in San Francisco and Chicago as well as at Carnegie Hall in New York; tonight she gives her first recital at the Wigmore Hall in London.
Beginning this September, Fliter will spend two years as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.
