The Brooklyn Academy of Music has announced the programming for the 2007 Next Wave Festival, its annual fall showcase for cutting-edge music, dance and theater.
The 25th Next Wave Festival, which runs from October 2–December 16, comprises 16 dance, music, theater and multimedia engagements, including four BAM commissions.
Among the highlights of the dance lineup are the BAM debuts of the Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato and his Compañía Nacional de Danza; the Finnish choreographer/dancer Tero Saarinen; and the dance-theater troupe Pappa Tarahumara of Japan.
In conjunction with the Asia Society, BAM presents the fourth Next Wave appearance of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, whose latest work entails the creation of original calligraphy at each performance. New York's John Jasperse returns with a BAM-commissioned work that features a set comprising found objects; the festival also features Ohad Naharin and the Batsheva Dance Company performing the New York premiere of Three.
Highlights of the music lineup include the Kronos Quartet performing with colleagues Kimmo Pohjonen and Samuli Kosminen of Finland, as well as in a BAM commission composed by New York artist Erik Sanko.
Another BAM commission involves the young singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, whose multimedia work The BQE (as in the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway) relates to the borough of Brooklyn.
Composer and violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain returns with a BAM commission that features the artist exploring the topic of loss while interacting with video.
Other highlights include Tan Dun's music-theater work The Gate, part of the composer's Orchestral Theater series.
The festival also includes a BAMcinématek series, BAMcafé live weekend music performances, humanities programming, visual art events, cultural partnerships and a new literary and film initiative.
