Met Opera Announces Contest to Identify Historical Figures in Orfeo

By Matthew Westphal
04 May 2007

For Mark Morris's new production of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at the Metropolitan Opera, costume designer Isaac Mizrahi hit on the idea of having the nearly 100 chorus members, who witness the opera's action and comment on it, dressed as actual figures from history.

So the Met has come up with a dandy idea of its own: a contest to see who can identify the greatest number of these historical personages.

(So far the critics have picked out Abraham Lincoln, King Henry VIII, Marie Curie, Charlie Chaplin, Mahatma Gandhi, Cleopatra, Liberace ... )

To enter, visit this page at the Met's website, where there are numbered photos of each dressed-up chorus member. (Have a look at the sample photos below.) The deadline is May 14.

The entrant who correctly identifies the greatest number of characters will win a pair of tickets to a Met performance next fall, plus a backstage tour of the opera house. What's more, everyone who submits answers will be entered into a random drawing for a Met prize package.

(I think they forgot to include Mother Theresa ... )
