Tonight the Metropolitan Opera opens its final new production of the 2006-07 season — and one of the most anticipated: Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. Mark Morris, considered by many the most musical choreographer working today, directs the Met's first new staging of the work in 35 years, with the Mark Morris Dance Group performing his choreography for the score's extended dance sequences. The impressive design team includes Isaac Mizrahi (costumes), Allen Moyer (sets) and James Ingalls (lighting).
David Daniels, currently the opera world's leading countertenor, sings the marathon role of Orpheus; soprano Maija Kovalevska is Eurydice, the beloved for whom Orpheus goes to hell and back; soprano Heidi Grant Murphy plays Amor (which is to say Cupid, the god of love himself). And the entire run of Orfeo is dedicated to the memory of the great mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who was to have played the title role.
Orfeo ed Euridice receives four performances at the Metropolitan Opera House: tonight, May 5 at 1:30 p.m. (broadcast over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Radio Network), May 9 at 7:30 p.m. (simulcast in free streaming audio at the Met's website), and May 12 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets and information are available at www.metopera.org.
