Kevin Kline to Narrate Peter and the Wolf for New York Philharmonic in July

By Ernio Hernandez
30 Apr 2007

Kevin Kline

Kevin Kline, a genuine star of both stage and screen, will make his New York Philharmonic debut this summer as narrator of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

Scheduled to play July 5 and 6 at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, then July 7 at upstate New York's Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the concerts will be conducted by Bramwell Tovey.

Kline follows in the footsteps of Burl Ives, Ray Bolger, Cyril Ritchard and Tony Randall, all of whom have narrated the beloved children's tale with the New York Philharmonic over the years. The performances at Avery Fisher Hall will be part of the final Summertime Classics program entitled "Moscow on the Hudson."

The Bethel Woods concert will be the Philharmonic's return to the venue, for which it played the inaugural concert last summer.

The versatile Kline recently played the title role of King Lear at the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater and also played in Mother Courage and Her Children and The Seagull for the Public in Central Park. In 2004, he was nominated for a Tony Award for playing Falstaff in the two parts of Shakespeare's Henry IV. The Juilliard graduate has also appeared in the films "Sophie's Choice," "Dave," "In & Out," "Soapdish," "De-Lovely," "The Big Chill," "The Ice Storm," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and "A Fish Called Wanda" (for which he won an Oscar).
