Soprano Soile Isokoski Leads Winners of 2007 BBC Music Magazine Awards
By Vivien Schweitzer
BBC Music Magazine has announced the winners of its 2007 awards, with soprano Soile Isokoski winning vocal award and disc of the year. Isokoski won disc of the year for her recording of Sibelius's orchestral songs with conductor Leif Segerstam and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra on Ondine Records. The jury called it "a thrilling performance of Luonnotar in which Isokoski's sonorous soprano is matched by atmospheric playing from the Finnish orchestra. The rest of the disc makes you wonder why Sibelius's orchestral songs occupy one of the most unjustly neglected corners of his output." Sibelius was also in the spotlight Colin Davis's recording of Kullervo on LSO Live, which won the choral award. The disc features Monica Groop, Peter Mattei and the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Mariss Jansons picked up the orchestral award for his RCO Live recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The opera prize went to Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Mathéus for Vivaldi's Griselda on Naďve, featuring Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Veronica Cangémi, Simone Kermes, Philippe Jaroussky, Stefano Ferrari, and Iestyn Davies. The Smetana Trio won the Chamber Music award for their recording of Dvorák Piano Trios on Supraphon; Luiza Borac won the instrumental award for her recording of the piano works of George Enescu on Avie. The jury award was given to a Hänssler disc of the songs of Charles Koechlin, sung by Juliane Banse and the SWR Vocal Ensemble led by Heinz Hollinger. The jury award for newcomer of the year, meanwhile, went to the Pavel Haas String Quartet for their Supraphon recording of Janácek string quartets.
The jury award for technical excellence in recording was given to a Capriccio disk featuring Christoph Eschenbach conducting the Orchestre de Paris, soprano Christine Schäfer and baritone Matthias Goerne in Zemlinskys Lyric Symphony.
