A new recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 4 by Lang Lang landed on the Billboard classical chart this week at no. 1. Performing alongside the Chinese superstar pianist on the Deutsche Grammophon release are conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the Orchestre de Paris.
Four other titles arrived on the week's chart as well: And on Earth, Peace — A Chanticleer Mass by the famed male vocal ensemble Chanticleer (no. 7), a recording of Brahms string quartets and the Piano Quintet by the Emerson Quartet and pianist Leon Fleisher (no. 10), soprano Nicole Cabell's debut CD with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Andrew Davis (no. 16), and soprano Nina Stemme's recording of Strauss's Four Last Songs with Anthony Pappano conducting the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House (no. 20).
Re-entering the chart were violinist Janine Jansen's recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasonss on Decca Classics (no. 8) and the soundtrack to the film The Painted Veil (no. 25).
Following the new Lang Lang Beethoven disc in the top five were (in order) cellist Yo-Yo Ma's Appassionato, Joshua Bell's Voice of the Violin, Sting's John Dowland CD Songs From the Labyrinth and soprano Anna Netrebko's Russian Album.
On the Billboard classical crossover chart, Josh Groban's Awake nudged back into the top slot after having been displaced by Il Divo's Siempre. The latter disc is back in second place, followed by the same boy band's Ancora and three discs in a row by blind tenor Andrea Bocelli: Amore, Under the Desert Sky and Amor. The chart's news seems to be the resurgence of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: two of its titles, Then Sings My Soul and Love Is Spoken Here, re-entered the chart at no. 11 and no. 15, respectively, and Showtime!, the choir's show tunes disc, rose from no. 12 to no. 4, slipping between Il Divo and Bocelli.
