The Boston Symphony Orchestra has postponed the world premiere of Where the Word Ends, a new work by Gunther Schuller commissioned in honor of the orchestra's 125th anniversary which was to have received its first performances beginning tonight.

"I've been looking forward very much to Gunther Schuller's new piece, Where the Word Ends, as part of my final Symphony Hall program this season," said BSO Music Director James Levine in a statement released earlier this month. "It's a major and extraordinary new work for orchestra, and one that in everyway reflects the full capabilities of the BSO and Gunther's own stature as one of America's greatest musicians. As it turns out, its scope and language require more rehearsal time than it could possibly receive in the context of this month's program as I had originally conceived it — and for this reason, I've decided to reschedule the premiere to a later season as part of a differently structured program that will allow us to do it full justice."

Replacing Where the Word Ends on this weekend's program is another work by Schuller, Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee, described as "the aural representation of the colors and patterns shown in seven paintings by [the] German artist." The concerts tonight, tomorrow and Saturday (March 31) also include Mozart's Symphony No. 25 and Piano Concerto No. 17 (featuring soloist Alfred Brendel) and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2.
