Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach to Begin U.S. Tour on May 15

By Vivien Schweitzer
16 Mar 2007

The Philadelphia Orchestra, under music director Christoph Eschenbach, will tour the U.S., beginning May 15 in Kansas City and finishing June 3 in Washington, D.C. Repertoire will include works by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Berlioz, Mozart, Schoenberg and Schubert; soloists include German baritone Matthias Goerne and orchestra principal woodwind players.

Other cities on the tour include Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, San Diego, Eugene (Oregon) and Seattle.

Among the programmed works are Brahms's First Symphony, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. Also included are performances of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for winds, featuring Philadelphia Orchestra principal oboe Richard Woodhams, principal clarinet Ricardo Morales, principal bassoon Daniel Matsukawa and principal horn Jennifer Montone. Baritone Matthias Goerne joins the Philadelphians for a selection of songs by Schubert.

Since its first tour in 1911, the Philadelphia Orchestra has completed 108 U.S. tours of varying size and scope. In 1936 the ensemble became the first American orchestra to make a transcontinental tour, traveling 11,000 miles for concerts in 28 cities, including Boston, Toronto, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, New York City, and three stops that are part of the 2007 U.S. tour: Chicago, San Francisco, and Omaha.
