Gramophone Editor James Jolly to Host New Program on BBC Radio 3

By Vivien Schweitzer
14 Mar 2007

James Jolly

James Jolly, Gramophone magazine’s editor-in-chief, will be one of two presenters of "The Classical Collection" - a new program on BBC Radio 3 that will run weekday mornings from 10 am to noon. Jolly’s first show will be broadcast on April 23.

The magazine’s website reports that he will host the program, which focuses on recordings of core classical repertoire, alongside longtime Radio 3 presenter Sarah Walker.

"The Classical Collection" will be broadcast live from Broadcasting House and is produced for Radio 3 by Classic Arts Productions. Gramophone Online quotes Roger Wright, Controller of BBC Radio 3, as saying: “We aim to encourage and guide our listeners through the wealth of recorded music. Sarah and James are authoritative voices whose knowledge will continue to build BBC Radio 3's reputation as the trusted guide to classical music.”

Commenting on his new role, Jolly said: “My tutor at school was Gramophone’s Richard Osborne, who opened my ears to the concept of interpretation of music, so the opportunity to introduce my personal choices of great music in great performances is really tremendous. Having edited Gramophone for 16 years, a vast number of outstanding recordings have crossed my desk so the chance to share them with others is a real treat. Also there are so many recordings that have acquired iconic status that it will be rewarding to see whether they have stood the test of time.”

Jolly also co-hosts a monthly new release program on XM Classics, part of XM Satellite Radio’s network broadcast from Washington DC.
