Soprano Dawn Upshaw, who returned to the concert stage last month for the first time since beginning treatment for breast cancer last November, has withdrawn from her scheduled performances this month with conductor David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. A statement from the orchestra cited fatigue following chemotherapy as the reason for the cancellation.

She had been scheduled to perform Benjamin Britten's song cycle Les Illuminations at Powell Symphony Hall in St. Louis March 16-18 and at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 30.

Upshaw's first concerts since her treatment were warmly received recitals in Oregon and California. However, according to a statement from Carnegie Hall, while on tour she contracted a cold which weakened her system, and her doctors have advised her to take more time to recover in order to regain her full strength and stamina.

Robertson and the orchestra have replaced the Britten cycle on the program with Ravel's Shéhérazade, with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer perfoming on the St. Louis dates and Susan Graham as the soloist at Carnegie Hall.
