Cleveland Orchestra to Release Latest Recording on DG

Universal Classics has announced that its Deutsche Grammophon label will issue the latest recording by the Cleveland Orchestra under music director Franz Welser-Möst. The release, of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, will be available beginning this summer both on CD and as a digital download.

The orchestra announced in early January that it would issue new recordings made from concert performances, beginning with the Beethoven Ninth, on a major record label; the identity of the label was not disclosed at that time. This summer's release will be the orchestra's first commercial recording since 2000 and its first with Welser-Möst.

The recording is taken from concerts in the orchestra's home auditorium, Severance Hall, on January 11-13 of this year. Joining conductor and players were the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and soloists soprano Measha Brueggergosman, mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, tenor Frank Lopardo and bass René Pape. (Pape is already a DG artist, and the label recently signed Brueggergosman.)

The U.S. spokesperson for DG said that, in principle, the label and the Cleveland Orchestra hope and expect to work together on further projects, although no further plans have yet been finalized.
