Kiri Te Kanawa Testifies in Australian Court for Lawsuit

Kiri Te Kanawa testified in an Australian court yesterday that she did indeed pull out of scheduled 2005 appearances with 57-year-old Australian pop singer John Farnham — due to her revulsion at the way he handled his fans' knickers.

The Associated Press reports that the London-based soprano, who retired from opera in 2004, told the New South Wales state Supreme Court yesterday that she "was concerned about the knickers or underpants and underwear apparel being thrown at him and him collecting it and obviously holding it in his hands as some sort of trophy."

It seems possible that Te Kanawa was also worried about being in the line of fire from randy Farnham fans, who might not always accurately aim their undergarments.

The Associated Press reports that the joint concerts' promoters, Leading Edge Events (who now seem to have their own knickers in a twist), are suing Te Kanawa, 62, and her former manager, Nick Grace, for alleged breach of contract and up to A$2 million Australian dollars (currently US$1.5 million).

Te Kanawa became aware of the intimate apparel issue after watching a DVD of a 2003 live performance by Farnham, according to the AP.
