Does Plácido Domingo want to end his career on a low note? Apparently so — the British magazine Opera reported this month that the 66-year-old Spanish tenor plans to sing the title role, written for baritone, in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra at Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2009. His spokesman confirmed the plans yesterday, reports the Associated Press.
Domingo will also perform the part at La Scala in Milan and the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London. He sang the opera's leading tenor role, Gabriele Adorno, for the first time in 1995 at New York's Metropolitan Opera.
In 2005 he told the British newspaper The Observer that he dreamed of singing Boccanegra before he retired. After that, he told the paper, "I will probably say Amen."
The lower depths won't be entirely new territory for Domingo, who sang as a baritone at beginning of his career in 1959. He began singing tenor when he joined the Mexican National Opera the following year and has since sung more than 120 opera roles on stage and in recordings.
