Juan Diego Flórez's Carnegie Hall Recital Rescheduled

The Carnegie Hall recital debut of tenor Juan Diego Flórez, which was canceled just hours before curtain time when the singer fell ill, has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 8 p.m. Entertainment & Concert Promotion, Inc., the event's presenter, announced the new date in a press release this afternoon.

Flórez's recital had been scheduled for the evening of December 1, but he reportedly developed tracheitis that day and cancelled the performance late that afternoon.

The tenor did recover sufficiently to perform the same program the following weekend at the Barbican Hall in London. "The only visible precaution," wrote Richard Fairman in the Financial Times of the concert, "was a small cup of tea strategically placed on an improbably large table. Perhaps other bel canto tenors should enquire what was in that tea. They could probably do with some too."

Reviewing the same performance for London's The Independent, Edward Seckerson said that Flórez has "a technique so effortless it is barely apparent ... Top Cs and Ds are almost casually negotiated; scales and arpeggios glide off the vocal cords ... The scales cascaded with not so much as a single bumpy aspirate. But then he stilled the hall with a Bellini song, 'La ricordanza,' and, in a clinching phrase of exquisite artistry, quietly brought the house down."

The program for the March 10 concert is the same as that announced for December 1: songs and arias by Mozart, Rossini, Rosa Mercedes Ayarza de Morales, Fauré, Massenet, Bizet, and Donizetti — all performed with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Tickets are priced from $25 to $95 and are available the Carnegie Hall box office, by telephone from CarnegieCharge (1-212-247-7800), and online at www.carnegiehall.org.
