Lim Hyung-joo, a 20-year-old Korean 'popera' tenor in the mold of Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban and the group Il Divo, has signed a $1 million recording deal with EMI Classics.
The contract, according to The Korea Times, calls for Lim to make one classical disc and two "special albums," presumably crossover. A spokesperson for EMI confirmed the deal to PlaybillArts last week, saying that Lim's recordings would be distributed within South Korea and possibly Japan.
Lim studied at the highly-regarded Yewon School in Seoul and the Juilliard School's pre-college division; he is currently enrolled at the Accademia San Felice in Florence. The young tenor became famous in his homeland after singing the South Korean national anthem at the 2003 inauguration of President Roh Moo-hyun; he has since released four bestselling discs.
