Metropolitan Opera Shop to Offer Tasty Treats From Opera Lover's Cookbook Today

16 Nov 2006

The Opera Lover's Cookbook and author Francine Segan.

Francine Segan, the acclaimed culinary historian and television personality who authored the cookbooks The Philosopher's Kitchen and Shakespeare's Kitchen, has a brand-new volume out for the opera fans among us: The Opera Lover's Cookbook. This evening from 5:30 to 7 at the Metropolitan Opera Shop, she and the Met Guild will be hosting a gathering with samples some of the delicious treats on offer in the book.

The Opera Lover's Cookbook offers complete plans and menus for a dozen operatically themed get-togethers. For instance, the Bel Canto feast starts off with a William Tell apple martini and continues with dates with Gorgonzola dolce latte, a salad of autumn hues with Rossini's truffle dressing, Figaro's fiery salmon ceviche, and so on.

There's also a "Tapas Party with Carmen," a "Mozart Dessert Menu" (our Amadeus was notoriously fond of sweets), a "Rustic Dinner with Verdi" (featuring Falstaff's fig and prosciutto penne), a "Hansel and Gretel Children's Party," an "English Pub Supper with Gilbert and Sullivan" (including Little Buttercup's scones), and an "All-American Brunch with Gershwin" (ending with Porgy's peach ice cream).

The book includes lip-smacking photographs of the meals by Mark Thomas, along with sumptuous opera production photos supplied by the Guild, anecdotes about opera stars and food, and pensées from the great opera composers. There's even a forward by Renée Fleming.

Francine Segan will sign copies of The Opera Lover's Cookbook, and offer samples of the recipes included in the book, on Thursday, November 16 at the Metropolitan Opera Shop, in the north lobby of the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York. This free event is hosted by the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
