South Korean pianist Min Soo Sohn has won the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary and a cash prize of C$35,000, organizers announced.

Sohn, 30, was announced the winner after the finals on November 3 at Calgary's Jack Singer Concert Hall in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts.

German Hinrich Alpers, 25, was awarded the C$25,000 second prize as well as the best ensemble performance prize and honors for the best performance of commissioned work; Chinese Hong Xu, 23, won third prize and C$17,500; American Spencer Myer, 28, won fourth prize and C$6,000; and Ukrainian Serhiy Salov, 27, won fifth prize and C$6,000.

The three first-place winners will also receive a three-season artistic and career development package estimated to be worth more than C$100,000. The seven remaining semi-finalists will receive C$1,000 each.

Born in Korea, Min Soo Sohn began his piano studies in the United States at age three and continued at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received an Artist Diploma in 2004. He is also an organist.

The Honens Competition was established in 1991 and is held every three years.
