Songs From the Labyrinth, the veteran rock star Sting's new Deutsche Grammophon recording of songs by John Dowland (with lutenist Edin Karamazov), has reached no. 1 on Billboard's US classical chart. The disc debuted on the UK classical chart at no. 1 last week but made no. 24 on the US chart.
Sting's CD edged out Joshua Bell's Voice of the Violin, which is now in second place following five weeks in the top slot. Paul McCartney's oratorio Ecce Cor Meum slipped from no. 2 to no. 4, one place behind crossover violinist André Rieu's The Homecoming.
The two new arrivals on the Billboard classical chart are both DG releases by renowned solo violinists: Hilary Hahn's recording of concertos by Paganini and Spohr with conductor Eiji Oue and the Swedish Radio Symphony (no. 7), and Anne-Sophie Mutter's new compilation disc, Simply Anne-Sophie.
On the Billboard classical crossover chart, Sarah Brightman's Diva: The Singles Collection remains at no. 1 for the second consecutive week. Andrea Bocelli, the operatic boy band Il Divo and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir continue to have three titles each in the crossover top 25.
