Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth will debut at the Metropolitan Opera House on January 17.
Kristin Chenoweth: Live at the Met will feature Chenoweth, a lyric soprano who made her name as a Broadway star, and a 12-piece orchestra and several dancers in a program including opera arias and signature songs, directed by Kathleen Marshall and conducted by Andrew Lippa.
Chenoweth, who trained as an opera singer, will make her Met stage debut as Samira in the revival of John Corigliano’s Ghosts of Versailles, scheduled to open in March 2010. Corigliano is re-writing the role of Samira (originally composed as a showcase for Marilyn Horne) to fit Chenoweth's voice.
In a statement, Chenoweth said, "I have always had the dream to sing at the Met, where the greatest stars in the world have given some of the most renowned performances in history. I am humbled that I now have this incredible opportunity and I am thrilled to have the chance to sing in this magnificent place."
Chenoweth, who received a Tony nomination for her work as Glinda the Good Witch in Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, has been seen on the New York stage in The Fantasticks, Scapin, Steel Pier, and Candide, among others. She won her Tony Award for her performance as Sally in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Chenoweth recently released her second solo recording, As I Am (Sony Classical). Her television and film credits include Kristin, The West Wing, and The Music Man.
Chenoweth returns to Broadway this season in the Roundabout's revival of The Apple Tree.
