Valery Gergiev and Kirov Orchestra Complete Lincoln Center's Shostakovich Symphony Cycle This Week

By Matthew Westphal
23 Oct 2006

Valery Gergiev

Lincoln Center's "Voices and Visionaries" festival continues this week with the tireless visionary Valery Gergiev conducting his own Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater in three concerts (October 23, 24 and 29) of Shostakovich symphonies.

These performances — which offer the Symphonies Nos. 11 (nicknamed "The Year 1905"), 6, 12 ("The Year 1917"), 14, 8 and 13 ("Babi Yar") — complete a Shostakovich cycle at Lincoln Center which Gergiev began in the spring with the Kirov Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

More information on these and other performances in the "Voices and Visionaries" festival is available at www.lincolncenter.org.
