"The hardest-working musician on the Philadelphia Orchestra's European tour ... and the most watchable." That's how David Patrick Stearns of The Philadelphia Inquirer described soprano Marisol Montalvo, who gave riveting performances of Matthias Pintscher's fiendishly difficult Herodiade-Fragmente with Christoph Eschenbach and the Philadelphians in late summer 2006. "She makes this jagged, atonal music sound like the most natural thing in the world," wrote Stearns, "In fact, she makes the piece profoundly sexy."
Montalvo will be repeating that feat this weekend at Severance Hall in Cleveland. And she'll be doing it on fairly short notice. It was only three days ago that cellist Truls Mørk announced his withdrawal from all appearances in the next month so as to remain in Norway near his father, who is seriously ill. The first of Mørk's scheduled concerts were to be tonight and Saturday (Oct. 21), in the US premiere of Pintscher's Cello Concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra under the composer's own baton. With the soloist for whom the concerto was written no longer available, Pintscher and the orchestra replaced that score with Herodiade and invited Montalvo to reprise her tour-de-force.
The program, which also features Pintscher conducting the Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus in Webern's Im Sommerwind and the suite from Debussy's Le Martyre de St.-Sébastien (with vocal soloists Laura Claycomb, Kimberly Lauritsen and Sandra Ross), will be performed tonight and October 21 at 8 pm at Severance Hall in Cleveland.
