A new EMI Classics recording of Ecce Cor Meum, the second oratorio by Paul McCartney, has entered the Billboard classical chart this week at no. 2. It trails only Joshua Bell's Voice of the Violin, which entered the chart at no. 1 four weeks ago and has remained in the top spot ever since.
There are five other new arrivals on the classical chart this week. Two are more-or-less crossover discs by popular string soloists: violinist André Rieu's The Homecoming! has landed on the chart at no. 3, while Sacred Cello, a disc consisting largely of hymn arrangements performed by Steven Sharp Nelson (called "the best cellist in Utah" by KSFI FM100), debuts at no. 18.
The latest installment in the Beethoven symphony cycle on Bis by Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, of the Ninth Symphony, has hit the chart at no. 12. The new Nonesuch disc of John Adams conducting My Father Knew Charles Ives and The Dharma at Big Sur, his concerto for electric violin and orchestra, landed at no. 15. Telarc's recording of Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony performing Elgar's "Enigma" Variations and Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes arrived at no. 19.
Cloudburst, a disc of striking, inventive choral works by Eric Whitacre on the Hyperion label, has re-entered the classical chart at no. 9 following a profile on NPR.
Bedtime Beats: The Secret to Sleep, the (reportedly effective) insomnia remedy on Rhino Records, has slipped to sixth place; No Boundaries by The 5 Browns has fallen to seventh.
On the Billboard classical crossover chart, the debut CD by tenor Vittorio Grigolo remains in the no. 2 position where it debuted three weeks ago; tenor Andrea Bocelli and the "popera" group Il Divo share the other spots in the top six. Entering the chart are The Dawning of the Day (no. 9), the latest disc by Ronan Tynan (formerly of The Three Irish Tenors), and The Wonder of Christmas (no. 8) by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, which also has discs at no. 7 and no. 12 on the crossover chart.
Chloe Hanslip's recording of John Adams's Violin Concerto on Naxos (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin) made Billboard's classical midline chart at no. 11. Anne-Sophie Mutter's set of the complete Mozart Violin Sonatas on DG, which entered the chart last week at no. 9, fell to no. 15, the bottom spot on the chart.
