George Edwards, Longtime New York Classical Radio Host, Dies at 87

By Vivien Schweitzer
04 Oct 2006

Classical radio host George Edward Steinhardt, who hosted New York-based radio station WQXR's "Bright and Early" program for forty years, died at 87 on August 21, reports The New York Times.

He joined WQXR in 1948, after working for nine different radio stations doing news, interviews and commercials.

The Times reports that Steinhardt's style "was characterized by precise diction, knowledge of classical music and jazz, and commentary on a raft of side interests including cooking, antique cars and energy conservation." He hosted his show under the name George Edwards.

Steinhardt was born in Brooklyn and studied at Brooklyn Poly Prep and electrical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He served in the Marine Corps in World War II, supervising technical equipment.

He died at his home in Tenafly, New Jersey, according to the Times.
