One of the major revivals of the fall opera season in New York gets underway this afternoon at Lincoln Center as Die tote Stadt opens at New York City Opera.

The striking multimedia staging by Frank Corsaro, with film and projections by Ronald Chase, has become one of City Opera's signature productions. The work itself, with a lush score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold — who would later escape the Nazis and become one of Hollywood's greatest film composers — recounts the story of a young widower who meets and becomes obsessed with a woman who could be the Doppelgänger of his late wife. Tenor Dan Chamandy makes his City Opera debut as the protagonist, Paul, with soprano Susan B. Anthony as Marietta.

New York City Opera's production of Die tote Stadt opens at 1:30 pm today at the New York State Theater in Lincoln Center; there will be five more performances, including two matinees, through October 14. Information on and tickets for Die tote Stadt and the rest of New York City Opera's 2006-07 season are available at www.nycopera.com.
