Voice of the Violin, Joshua Bell's disc of favorite arias and songs transcribed for violin solo, has landed in the no. 1 slot in its first week on the Billboard classical chart.
Bell's disc bumped No Boundaries by The 5 Browns from the top slot it has occupied for weeks. That title is now at no. 2, and the family fivesome's debut CD fell last week from fourth place to tenth.
Three discs by André Rieu occupy the third, fourth and sixth slots, with Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone at no. 5.
A recording by Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble, Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, has risen from no. 11 to no. 7.
The latest disc of Vivaldi sinfonias and concertos for strings by Andrea Marcon, the Venice Baroque Orchestra and Baroque violinist Giuliano Carmignola jumped from no. 15 to No. 8.
The Sony Classical release of the Symphony No. 5 and String Quartet by 14-year-old composer Jay Greenberg has fallen from no. 6 last week to no. 9, and tenor Salvatore Licitra's Forbidden Love has slipped from fourth to tenth.
The second new title on the Billboard classical chart this week, debuting at no. 20, is DG's latest version of Wagner's Parsifal, recorded live at the Vienna State Opera with Christian Thielemann conducting and Plácido Domingo, Waltraud Meier and Franz-Josef Selig in the leading roles.
Andrea Bocelli and the "popera" group Il Divo remain firmly lodged in the top five slots on the Billboard classical crossover chart, with the soundtracks to the films Pride and Prejudice, Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and Memoirs of a Geisha, as ever, not far behind them. The Vitamin Records release Strung Out On Three Days Grace, another string quartet tribute CD to a rock band, entered the chart at no. 18. Il Divo's "The Christmas Collection" and Chanticleer's How Sweet the Sound both re-entered the chart, at nos. 20 and 25, respectively.
