Los Angeles Opera is presenting a sumptuous production of Verdi's La traviata with a sumptuous star: Renée Fleming, whose Violetta Valéry is (perhaps surprisingly) her first performance with the company in an actual opera.
Her Alfredo is Rolando Villazón, one of the most exciting young tenors around; veteran baritone Renato Bruson sings the elder Germont. James Conlon, LA Opera's new music director, is conducting; the production is a newly refurbished version of the 1999 staging by Marta Domingo. The only remaining performance is next Sunday (September 17), but Decca is recording all three performances in the (all too short) run for release on DVD.
