Ara Guzelimian, senior director and artistic advisor at Carnegie Hall, will become dean of the Juilliard School in July 2007, Juilliard president Joseph W. Polisi announced today.
He will work as dean-designate from January through June 2007, to smooth the transition from current dean Stephen Clapp, who steps down that month.
Guzelimian will continue to work with Carnegie Hall through the 2006-07 season as an artistic consultant and as host and producer of the "Making Music" series at Zankel Hall. Stephen Clapp will continue to work at Juilliard as a member of the violin and chamber music faculties.
Polisi said of the appointment, "Ara is the perfect person to help guide the school in artistic directions which we are poised to pursue in music, dance and drama."
Guzelimian commented, "For most of my professional life, I have had the privilege of working closely with many great artists who received their formative training at the Juilliard School. After eight enormously rewarding years at Carnegie Hall, a musical mecca which represents a culmination of the aspirations of young musicians, it now feels very appropriate to focus my work on the training of a new generation of artists."
Guzelimian, 52, was born in Cairo, Egypt and grew up in Los Angeles. He holds a bachelor's degree in music history from UCLA. He has been senior director and artistic advisor of Carnegie Hall since September 1998, where his responsibilities include program planning and development, as well as the creation of a wide range of audience education programs.
As a writer, he has contributed articles and reviews to publications including The New York Times, Musical America, Opera Quarterly, Opera News, Symphony magazine, and program books of the Salzburg and Helsinki Festivals. He is editor of Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society, a collection of conversations between Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said.
Before coming to Carnegie Hall, Guzeliman was the artistic administrator of the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado and artistic director of the Ojai Festival in California. Before that, he worked for fifteen years as an administrator and radio producer for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
