Igor Oistrakh will be unable to adjudicate the 7th International Violin Competition of Indianapolis due to health and visa problems, organizers announced.
In addition, Oistrakh was scheduled to perform as a soloist in the September 10 gala season opening of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and give a lecture at the International Forum on Violins on September 6; he has withdrawn from those engagements as well.
IVCI jury president Jaime Laredo said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened that Igor has had to withdraw. I was very much looking forward to welcoming him back to Indianapolis to serve on the jury for the third time, as well as perform with him at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra gala."
Oistrakh previously served on the jury in 1994 and 1998, representing Russia.
Executive director Glen Kwok added, "Regrettably, we live in a different world post 9/11. It has had resounding effects on every aspect of our lives, including the performing arts. It would have been an historic occasion to have Igor with us. Additionally, it would have been most meaningful for him to see the competition's exhibit at the Indiana State Museum. Each quadrennial, we dedicate an exhibit to an extraordinary musician who has significantly influenced the violin world. The 7th Quadrennial exhibit is devoted to the career of Igor’s father, David Oistrakh."
The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis runs from September 1-17. The 2006 jury consists of Jaime Laredo (president), Pamela Frank, Cho-Liang Lin and Joel Smirnoff (United States), Kyoko Takezawa (Japan), Rodney Friend (Great Britain), Pierre Amoyal (France) and Malcolm Lowe (Canada). Oistrakh will not be replaced.
