New York City Opera Expands 'Opera-For-All' to Offer More $25 Events

By Vivien Schweitzer
14 Aug 2006

New York City Opera will expand its successful Opera-For-All program with additional $25 performances, the company announced today.

The company launched Opera-For-All last year with three special performances — one of highlights from the City Opera season and two of Puccini's Madama Butterfly — for which all tickets were $25. All three of the shows were sold out, and, according to the company, 71 percent of the audience had never been to a City Opera event before.

This fall, the company will again offer an evening (September 7) of highlights from the upcoming season, as well as performances of Puccini’s La Bohème on September 8 and 10 and Bizet’s Carmen on September 9. All seats will cost $25 and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Details for further Opera-For-All events will be announced later this season.

The $25 tickets will be available for purchase this week at City Opera’s free Afternoon Arias series at Bryant Park, which runs tomorrow through Friday (August 15 -18) at 12:30 pm. Tickets will go on sale at the New York State Theater box office next Monday, August 21.

The September 7 concert will feature music director George Manahan and City Opera’s orchestra, chorus and featured artists from the 2006-2007 season in arias from Puccini’s La Bohème, Bizet’s Carmen, Handel’s Semele, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. After the concert, City Opera will host the entire audience in a celebration on the New York State Theater’s promenade.
