Tomorrow Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra begin a summer's-end series of large-scale free performances at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion — the now-famous open-air performance venue designed by Frank Gehry — in the city's Millennium Park.
"Blockbuster Week" opens on September 9 with a Lyric Opera concert headlined by stars of its 2006-07 season, including Susan Graham, Andrea Gruber and Patricia Racette, accompanied by the Lyric Opera Orchestra led by company music director Andrew Davis.
On Monday, September 11, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company will present "Citizens of the World," the city of Chicago's official commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The performance will "combine music and storytelling to explore the idea of citizenship."
The week will close with two CSO concerts led by David Alan Miller. The September 13 concert will include Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Gang Chen and Zhanhao He's The Butterfly Lovers and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. The September 14 performance will open the World Music Festival: Chicago 2006; the lineup includes the Chicago-based Radio Maqam Ensemble as well as pipa player Yang Wei, who will perform Tan Dun's Concerto for Pipa and Orchestra.
Lyric Opera opens its 52nd season on September 16 with Puccini's Turandot. The season continues through March 2007 with 83 performances of eight operas, including Il trovatore, Die Fledermaus and Dialogues of the Carmelites.
