Tonight at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, James Conlon will conduct the U.S. premiere of Ogelala, a ballet by Czech-Jewish composer Erwin Schulhoff.
Ogelala is based on the legend of a pre-Columbian Mexican warrior; the score combines jazz elements, ancient Indian battle cries and Central European Expressionism. The work was performed in 1925 and 1927 before being banned by the Nazis.
For the past several years Conlon has made a project of reviving the music of composers whose lives were lost and whose compositions were suppressed during the Holocaust, including Schulhoff, Alexander Zemlinsky and Viktor Ullman. Most recently, Conlon led a number of works by Schulhoff this summer at the Chicago Symphony's Ravinia Festival, where he is music director.
The Aspen Chamber Symphony performs the work in a concert in the Benedict Music Tent; the program also includes Mozart's Symphony No. 33 and the Piano Concerto No. 17 with Lang Lang as soloist.
