Auckland Philharmonia to Dress Visiting Artists in New Zealand Fashion

By Vivien Schweitzer
10 Aug 2006

Stern patricians of the classical music world often deride attempts to inject a little contemporary glamour into the industry. But not the Auckland Philharmonia — which has engaged local designers to outfit guest artists.

The New Zealand Herald reports that the orchestra is not leaving fashion to chance. Local couturiers Liz Mitchell and Elisabeth and Neville Findlay, co-founders of the New Zealand fashion label Zambesi, will be dressing soloists from overseas for their performances with the Philharmonia.

For tomorrow's concert at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, pianist Marina Kolomiytseva will wear a Liz Mitchell gown and Zambesi has prepared an outfit for concert presenter Elena Stejko.

An orchestra spokeswoman told the Herald she hoped the initiative would grow, saying, "It's a win-win situation for everyone. The artists look and feel stunning for their performance and it's a subtle but effective way of putting New Zealand fashion on both the local and international stage."
