For the first time in its 33-year-history, the New York Grand Opera has cancelled a performance due to hot weather.
The company was scheduled to perform Puccini's Tosca at 7:30 this evening in Central Park. But with temperatures in Manhattan this afternoon forecast to reach 100 degrees — and even after dark unlikely to fall below the mid-90s amid the concrete on and in front of the park's Naumburg Bandshell, the performance venue — the show will not go on.
The show will not go on yet, that is. New York Grand Opera's website says that Tosca, conducted by company founder and director Vincent La Selva and starring Lucianna La Monaco, Gustavo López Manzitti and Raemond Martin, will be rescheduled.
The New York Grand Opera generally performs two or three fully-staged productions each summer, with free admission, at the Naumburg Bandshell (near 72nd Street) in Central Park. Also planned for this month is a double-bill of Puccini's Suor Angelica and Leoncavallo's I pagliacci at 7:30 pm on Friday, August 25.
